LOS ANGELES — The University of Southern California Marshall School of Business was recently named a winner of a 2016 Telly Award for its “Big Ideas in Economics” video about renowned free-market economist Milton Friedman, featuring faculty member Dr. Kevin J. Murphy. The Marshall School of Business produced the video for its Online MBA program.
USC Marshall introduced its Online MBA program in fall 2015. In addition to developing a specific, integrated curriculum and training faculty in virtual instruction, the School built a studio to produce engaging educational content, including the Big Ideas in Economics video series.
The informative and entertaining video earned a Bronze People’s Telly in the Online Video (education) category. Each year, People’s Telly entries receive an average of 125,000 views, with viewers from around the world using a five-star rating system to determine the winners.
The award-winning USC Marshall video incorporates historical photos and film footage, animation, and even a scene from television’s “Modern Family,” to help illustrate the economic theory popularly known as TANSTAAFL. TANSTAAFL is the lengthy acronym for “There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.” Friedman used a variation of this expression as the title of his classic 1975 economics book, in which he asserts that it is impossible for government to offer goods and services at no one’s expense.
“Our full-time affordable online MBA programs, it’s faculties and instructional design team work together, drawing deeply on their knowledge and expertise to produce creative, high-quality and engaging educational content like the Big Ideas in Economics video series,” said Phil Griego, USC Marshall’s Assistant Dean of Online Learning. “Rather than just posting our traditional campus-based MBA content online, USC Marshall takes advantage of a full range of media and technological learning tools to provide our online students with a distinctive educational experience.”
The Telly Awards, founded in 1979, is a competition honoring cable TV commercials and programs; video and film productions; and web commercials, videos and films.
